EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Prof. Dr. Bashir Ahmad was born on April 6, 1965, in Mardan, Pakistan. He excelled academically, completing his matriculation from Government High School No. 3 Mardan in 1982. He then pursued his FSC from Nisar Shaheed College Risalpur in 1984.
Medical Career
Dr. Bashir Ahmad graduated from Khyber Medical College, University of Peshawar, with an MBBS degree in 1989. He completed his house job at KTH and LRH in 1990. In 1991, he joined an NGO working with Afghan refugees in Chitral and Swabi.
Psychiatry Specialization
Dr. Bashir Ahmad pursued his specialization in psychiatry, completing his DPM from Punjab University, Lahore, in 1993. He then worked as a medical officer in the Psychiatry Department at KTH from 1994 to 1996. In 2000, he cleared his FCPS part 2 in psychiatry.
International Experience
In 2004, Dr. Bashir Ahmad moved to England, where he worked as a substantive consultant at Milton Keynes Hospital NHS. He obtained his CCST from the Specialist Training Authority, England, in 2004. He also completed a postgraduate diploma in CBT from the Institute of Psychiatry at the Maudsley, King’s College London, UK, in 2007.
Academic and Leadership Roles
Dr. Bashir Ahmad returned to Pakistan in 2011 and joined the Psychiatry Department at Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2017 and Professor in 2020. He has trained over 40 FCPS and MCPS trainees and introduced Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) in Pakistan.
National Recognitions and Awards
Dr. Bashir Ahmad has received several national recognitions and awards, including:
– Lifetime Achievement Award from Dow University of Health Sciences Karachi and PACT
– Bronze Medal from Brain Research Organisation UK
– Elected as Chapter Chief Pakistan Psychiatric Society for two terms
– Elected as Finance Secretary Pakistan Psychiatric Society for two consecutive terms
Contributions and Publications
Dr. Bashir Ahmad has contributed to several national guidelines, including:
– Author of the Chapter on “Non-Pharmacological Interventions” in the National Guidelines, Pakistan Psychiatric Society, 2022
– Expert Reviewer for “Clinical Guidelines for Assessment and Management of Early Psychosis in Pakistan”
– He has published around 20 articles in national and international journals.
